INS Karanj, third Scorpene-Class Submarine, commissioned into Indian Navy

INS Karanj, India’s third Scorpene-class diesel-electric submarine, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Wednesday. Scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj delivered to Indian Navy; to be commissioned next month

Diesel-electric attack submarine INS Karanj has advanced stealth and combat capabilities and has been built by the MDL under Project 75. INS Karanj The Indian Navy is all set to get its third Scorpene-class submarine next month, with the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) handing over the sub to the force on Monday. The submarine has been handed over to the Navy three years after sea trials began in January 2018. The submarine will be commissioned into the Indian Navy in March as INS Karanj. Accepting the submarine yesterday, MDL chairman and managing director Vice Admiral Narayan Prasad (retired) and Western Naval Command’s chief of staff officer (technical) Rear Admiral B Sivakumar put their signatures on the document. Ballistic missile submarine Arighat in final stages of trials, to be commissioned early 2021

Once Arighat is commissioned, India will have two operational SSBNs that are equipped with the 750-KM range K-15 missile, designed for retaliatory nuclear strikes. India’s kilo class submarine INS Sindhuraj during the Malabar 2020 exercise in the Bay of Bengal Arighat, the second of the indigenous Arihant class nuclear-powered ballistic missile carrying submarine (SSBN), is in the final stages of sea trials and will be commissioned early next year, ThePrint has learnt. Sources in the defence and security establishment said the submarine has performed well during the sea trials so far, and added that the commissioning of the vessel was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. “It should be done (commissioned) early next year,” a source said.
