India Likely to Get Air Defence Command, Maritime Command By August 15

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort this August 15, a big announcement on restructuring India’s defence forces is likely. Top sources, in the know of things, say that two theatre commands — the Maritime Command and the Air Defence Command — will be operational by August 15. The Air Defence Command will be based out of Allahabad and will control air assets of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Army and Navy. It will be responsible for protecting military assets from airborne enemies and will be commanded by a three-star officer of the IAF. The Maritime Command will be based out of Karwar and will be responsible for the security of the Indian Ocean region. It will be commanded by a three-star officer of the Indian Navy. For the third time this year, a cadet from Punjab has bagged the prestigious Sword of Honour for being adjudged as overall best cadet of his batch during pre-commission training in an Army institution. The Sword of Honour for the Autumn Term, 2020, was awarded to Lt Watandeep Singh Sidhu during the Passing out Parade (PoP) held at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, on Saturday. He has opted for the elite Parachute Regimen Sidhu, who held the rank of Academy Cadet Adjutant in the final term at IMA, hails from Threeke near Ludhiana. An alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College, he had joined the National Defence Academy, Kharakvasla, in November 2016 and after completing the three-year course in 2019, proceeded to the IMA. Indian Navy, Air Force To Get Indigenous ‘Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon’ With 100 Km Range For Standoff Precision Strike

  DRDO’s SAAW (Facebook) At its meeting earlier today, the Defence Acquisition Council, headed by the Defence Minister, cleared the procurement of the indigenously developed ‘Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon’ or SAAW for the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), SAAW has a range of around 100 km and weighs around 125 kg. The weapon, which is being procured at an approximate cost Rs 970 crore, will give the Air Force and the Navy the capability to hit enemy airfields and runways from a standoff distance with high precision during conflicts. Given that this weapon can be launched from standoff ranges, the aircraft launching it can remain at a safe distance from the enemy target. In many cases, the weapon can be fired by IAF fighters from within the Indian air space. AFCAT 2020 exam postponed to October 3 & 4 Indian Air Force has rescheduled the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) to October 3 & 4, 2020. Earlier the exam was scheduled to be held from August 31, 2020.     The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is conducted by the Indian Air Force. The exam is held twice a year in February and August/September, respectively, to select Class-I Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties (Technical and Non-Technical). The wargames are being held over Pakistan air space and a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) had been issued by the Pakistan Air Force to inform about its aerial drills, government sources told ANI. A close watch is being kept on their activities by the Indian Air Force as the Pakistani jets have been carrying out different manoeuvres including night-time flying by its combat aircraft including Chinese JF-17, F-16s, and Mirage-3s, sources said. The Pakistani aircraft also have been practising drills like defending against night-time raids like the Balakot aerial strikes by the Indian Air Force in February last year, they said.
