Army to get 1st batch of women in its rank-and-file this year

The Indian army will be inducting women in its rank-and-file for the first time in the coming weeks with the training of the first batch of women cadets in the Corps of Military Police (CMP) scheduled for completion in the next few weeks in Bengaluru. The cadets began their 61-week training on January 6, 2020. And, even as the passing out parade of the first batch is yet to be held, more than 4,000 women had applied to be part of the CMP in the recently held rally by the Indian army. Those selected from this rally would be part of the second batch of women in CMP. So far, the army had only women officers in certain streams and this is the first time that women will be inducted in the non-officer category. These cadets, once they complete their training, could be posted in any one of the army’s divisions, including the ones in the forward areas. BHEL bags order to supply Super Rapid Gun Mounts for Indian Navy frontline ships

HAL hands over ALHs to Indian Navy and Coast Guard; LUH Army Variant receives IOC

State-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on Friday said it has handed over three Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH Mk III) to the Indian Navy and two to Indian Coast Guard as part of its 16 helicopter contract at the ongoing Aero India. IAF deputy chief to monitor new ₹48,000 cr Tejas project

The first Mk-1A aircraft will be delivered to the air force in three years, with the rest being supplied by 2030. The deal involves the supply of 73 Mk-1A fighter jets and 10 LCA Mk-1 trainer A three-star Indian Air Force officer will head the team that will monitor the  ₹ 48,000 crore LCA (light combat aircraft) Mk-1A contract awarded to state-run plane maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a senior defence ministry officer said at  Aero India 2021  on Thursday. The monitoring team will ensure timely delivery of the 83 aircraft. “Right from the contract signing, an integrated project monitoring team headed by the deputy chief of air staff will closely monitor the implementation of the contract. Biannual review by all stakeholders is planned to undertake course corrections needed to enable HAL to deliver the rated production,” said VL Kantha Rao, director general (acquisition) in the ministry.

India gets 6K Negev LMGs from Israel, to add more firepower to forces

India had signed a contract with Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) on March 19, 2020 to procure 16,479 LMGs under Fast Track Procedure. With the disputed border with China and Pakistan active at the same point of time, the guns will add more firepower to the deployed frontline troops. The Negev 7.62X51mm Light Machine Gun is a combat proven weapon and currently used by several countries around the globe. This LMG will greatly enhance the lethality and range of a soldier vis-a-vis the presently used weapon. Indian Army received first lot of consignment of 6,000 quantities in mid January this year in Mumbai. The guns have been shifted to Jabalpur and is undergoing proper inspection. The rest of the guns is expected to arrive by March end of this year. DRDO, Indian Navy conduct successful maiden trial of SAHAYAK-NG air-droppable container

The DRDO along with the Indian Navy has conducted a successful maiden trial of the SAHAYAK-NG air-droppable container from an IL-38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa, an official statement said on Wednesday. SAHAYAK-NG is India's first indigenously designed and developed air droppable container, said the Defence Ministry's statement. It is aided by GPS, can carry a payload of up to 50 kg and can be dropped from a heavy aircraft, the ministry said. Two labs of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private company Avantel were involved in its design and development. Indian Army launches 'SAI' - indigenous messaging application similar to WhatsApp

In the quest for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' , Indian Army has developed and launched a secure messaging application named the "Secure Application for the Internet (SAI)" that supports an end-to-end secure voice, text and video calling services for Android platform over internet, the Ministry of Defence said here on Thursday. The model is similar to commercially available messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, SAMVAD "The model is similar to commercially available messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, SAMVAD and GIMS and utilises end-to-end encryption messaging protocol. Make in India: Indian and Turkish shipyards close contract for building FSS ships for the Indian Navy

Representative Image The Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) is going ahead with Turkish shipyard partner M/S Anadolu shipyard after signing a contract with them for technical collaboration for enabling the shipyard to build five fleet support ships. Confirming this, a senior official said that “The total initial estimated project cost is about Rs 10,000 crore for the 45,000-ton fleet support ships (FSS) for the Indian Navy. Defence Ministry sought six months time in view of pandemic, said decision making at final stage.   Supreme Court The Supreme Court has granted one more month to the Union Defence Ministry to comply with its February order and grant permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army. Ministry of Defence had moved the top court seeking six more months to implement court's February verdict in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Centre said that decision making was at a final stage and only formal orders were awaited. On February 17 this year, the apex court had upheld Delhi High Court's 2010 order which allowed permanent commission for women officers in Indian Army, and had asked Centre to comply with the order by May 2020.
