Pak threatens to boycott event, UAE stands firm on OIC Cooperation invite to India

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) strongly defended the decision to invite India as a guest of honour to the meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers which it is hosting on March 1-2, Pakistan’s strong objection and threat to boycott the event notwithstanding.  Its top leadership conveyed to the Indian government that the UAE was looking forward to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj’s visit for the OIC meet, brushing aside Pakistan’s objections, people aware of the matter told ET.  In Abu Dhabi, besides delivering a lecture at the OIC plenary, Swaraj will hold bilateral meetings with some of her counterparts from the members of the grouping.  Pakistan had threatened to boycott the meeting if the invitation to India was not withdrawn. It claimed that Turkey was also opposed to Swaraj’s speech at the plenary. However, Turkey has backed Bangladesh in demanding OIC reforms to seek India’s participation.  “The invite to India on the occasion of 50th anniv

Next 72 hrs crucial for India-Pak : If war happens it shall be bloodier than World War 2 - Pak Minister

Pakistan Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed on Wednesday said that his country doesn't want war with India but warned any conflict between the two nations will be "more horrific than the World War" as Pakistan denounced the Indian air strikes and vowed to retaliate appropriately.  Tensions between the two countries after the Indian strike in Pakistan's Balakot on Tuesday - and Wednesday's tit-for-tat claims over downing each other's warplanes - were fully reflected in most of the country's leading newspapers which blamed India for creating insecurity in the region.  After Pakistan claimed to have shot down two Indian fighter jets and captured two pilots, Sheikh Rasheed, who is known for being outspoken, said: "... the Pakistani Fizayee (Pakistan Air Force) has maintained its honour... India which was yesterday celebrating (its strikes on Balakot) learnt this also happens.  "We don't want war... the Director General, ISPR, has already explained Pak

IAF pilot in Pak custody will be governed under Geneva Convention: Pakistani Army

Indian Air Force's Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, in Pakistani custody after his plane was shot down on Wednesday, will be governed under the Geneva Convention of 1929.  "There is only one pilot under Pakistan Army's custody. Wing Comd Abhi Nandan is being treated as per norms of military ethics," Pakistani military spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Twitter as tension between the two countries escalated.  The rules protecting prisoners of war (POWs) are specific. They were first detailed in the 1929 Geneva Convention and later amended in the third 1949 Geneva Convention following the lessons of World War II.  According to the rules, the status of POW only applies in international armed conflict.  "POWs are usually members of the armed forces of one of the parties to a conflict who fall into the hands of the adverse party," the Convention states.  It says POWs cannot be prosecuted for taking a direct part in hostilities.  "Their deten

Continuous mock drills tired down Pakistani Radars and Quick Reactions Jets - then came the Strike

Before the strike at 3.45 am on Tuesday, the IAF tired down Pakistani air defences with a series of mock runs that kept its fighters and radars engaged. One of these took place near the Sri Ganganagar border in Rajasthan which was backed by early warning aircraft that were up in the air and long-range mid-air tankers.  A Pak response was seen after its quick reaction jets scrambled for interception but the Indian jets turned back.  Similarly, another run was made close to the Pathankot border, again putting the Pakistani air force under pressure and tiring out its air defences that were focused on the incoming planes. While the Indian jets were hovering close to the border, the main strike formation of a dozen fighters — a mix of Mirage-2000 and Su-30 MKI jets — headed towards the LoC for the cross-border attack.  It is learnt that the Mirage-2000 fighters penetrated the LoC for less than 10 km as part of the strike run and emptied their SPICE-2000 munitions before turning back. The st

Indian diplomats ignore handshake by Pak officials at ICJ

Indian diplomats on Monday ignored the handshake gesture by senior Pakistani officials and instead greeted them with a 'namaste' on the first day of the hearing in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) here. The four-day hearing in the Jadhav case opened Monday at the ICJ headquarters amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following one of the worst terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group that killed at least 40 CRPF soldiers. Ahead of the hearing this morning, Pakistan's Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan reached out to Deepak Mittal, joint secretary, the ministry of external affairs, to shake hand but he responded with a namaste. Khan then extended his hand to Venu Rajamony, the Indian ambassador to the Netherlands, who was sitting next to Mittal. Rajamony too greeted him with a namaste. The Pakistani official then moved to Harish Salve, the former attorney general who is representi

Army to test Integrated Battle Groups for warfare strategy

The Indian Army will test a new concept of warfare — Integrated Battle Groups — as part of an exercise under its Western Command in Punjab in the next few months, top officials said.  The corps-level exercise will test two types of configurations of the Integrated Battle Group (IBG) — one for offensive roles for cross-border operations and the other for defensive postures to withstand an enemy onslaught. IBGs will replace brigades during the exercise. A brigade comprises three to four units of about 800 troops each. IBG, on the other hand, is equipped with all the elements of warfare like artillery guns, tanks, air defence and logistical elements.  IBGs ensure better integration and self-sufficiency than the existing formations. A brigade during hostilities has to wait to be augmented by different types of units like artillery and logistics. This slows down the mobility. IBGs will have all such units built in. “The testbed will help determine whether the integration in IBGs works and i

Relationship between India, US on very positive track : Former US defence secretary William Cohen to WION

The whole world is trying to figure out what is happening in the United States, and the shrinking role that President Trump wants the US to play in a technologically-integrating world. He has walked out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership where the US was leading the negotiations and norm-setting to arrange integration with 11 other economies to deal with the economic and technological challenge from China. European and other allies are undergoing uncertainty related to US security commitments. Decisions are seen as sudden, whimsical and subject to quick reversals. All these will have implications also for India. If there is a sudden decision to withdraw significantly from Afghanistan, there will be an impact on the endurance of the governance and security structures in that country leading to instability and a security and terrorism-related challenge for India. The posture related to China's military assertiveness in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean region will also constrain
