Army inducts first batch of women in military police

The army plans to induct 800 women into the military police with a yearly intake of 52 women who will serve as personnel below officer rank. The Indian Army on Saturday inducted the first batch of women into the Corps of Military Police , the first time women have joined the military in the non-officer cadre, officials said. Women have been serving as officers in select branches of the three services since the early 1990s. “The Corps of Military Police Centre & School (CMP C &S) at Bengaluru held the attestation parade of the first batch of 83 women soldiers at the Dronacharya Parade Ground on May 8. The parade was conducted as a low-key event while observing all Covid-19 protocols,” the army said in a statement. Among the three services, the army is the only one to induct women as non-commissioned officers. These women have joined the army after a 61-week training period. Chennai-based start-up Torus Robotics is manufacturing Unmanned Ground Vehicles to help ferry heavy loads for the Indian Army “You think of ‘unmanned’, and you think of drones, in the sky,” says 25-year-old Vibhakar Senthil. In Ambattur — widely regarded as the Detroit of India — his start-up Torus Robotics is set to change that, by making Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) for the Indian Army.  At the Aero India 2021 in Bengaluru, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Torus Robotics signed an MOU with the Government, on the joint development of UGVs for the armed forces with BEML Limited.  “With BEML, we are now developing a high-altitude Logistics UGV with 750 kilograms payload. It will be an all-terrain vehicle to supply to and from bases [without the need of human presence] in bad weather conditions, for the Northern Command,” says Vibhakar. The first record was created when Pannu cycled from Leh to Manali (472 km distance) on October 10, 2020, in just 35 hours and 25 minutes, the Army officials noted. Indian Army's Lieutenant Colonel Bharat Pannu Indian Army's Lieutenant Colonel Bharat Pannu has earned two Guinness World Records for his fastest solo cycling feats from October last year, said officials on Thursday.  The first record was created when Pannu cycled from Leh to Manali (472 km distance) on October 10, 2020, in just 35 hours and 25 minutes, the Army officials noted.  Pannu created a second record when he cycled the 5,942-km-long 'Golden Quadrilateral' route, which connects Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, in 14 days, 23 hours and 52 minutes, they said.  This cycling event had started from India Gate in New Delhi on October 16, and it ended back at the same spot on October 30, the officials said.  Pannu received his two Guinness World Record certificates a few days back, they added.

Indian Army likely to enrol JCOs directly to overcome shortage of officers

JCOs are currently enrolled as jawans and are promoted to officers over a period of time based on their performance and on their ability to clear promotion examinations. The Indian Army is discussing a proposal to directly enrol Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) in all arms of the service to address the shortage of nearly 14,000 officers. JCOs — a link between the officers and other ranks in the Indian Army — are currently enrolled as jawans and are promoted to officers over a period of time based on their performance and on their ability to clear promotion examinations. Currently, a few JCOs are directly enrolled as religious teachers and in certain technical arms such as the Corps of Engineers. However, fighting arms of the Indian Army do not have any provision for direct enrollment of JCOs. The Army has been promoting JCOs to officers from among their own ranks. A 30-member Indian Army team comprising officers, junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and soldiers from the Dogra regiment will participate in the exercise 'Shantir Ogroshena' (front runner of peace). The application supports end-to-end secure voice, text and video-calling services for Android platforms over the internet  From April 1, the Indian Army is likely to start using SAI (Secure Application for Internet), a messaging platform, for internal communications, Army chief General M.M. Naravane said on Wednesday.  He said the application, developed by Colonel Sai Shankar, is undergoing the process of getting cyber and security clearance and data testing.  "One of our officers has developed a software application, which is the equivalent of WhatsApp.”  "We plan to introduce that throughout the Indian Army.
