IAF chief visits Colombo to mark Sri Lankan Air Force’s 70th anniversary

The IAF contingent arrived in Colombo on February 27. The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team had taken part in the SLAF’s golden jubilee celebrations two decades ago. Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria reached Colombo on Wednesday to attend the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lankan Air Force, an IAF spokesperson said. He is in the island nation on an invitation from SLAF commander Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana. Last week, the IAF sent its Suryakiran Aerobatic Team, Sarang Helicopter Display Team and the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft to Sri Lanka to take part in the SLAF’s 70th anniversary celebrations from March 3-5. “As part of his two-day visit, the IAF chief will attend the inaugural ceremony on March 3 during which a flypast and aerobatic display is scheduled. IAF will focus on Rs 1.3 lakh crore deal for 114 fighter jets

The IAF has already issued the Request for Information (RFI) for the tender. Global leaders including fighter jet manufacturers from the US, France, Russia and Sweden have responded to the RFI. With the deal for 83 LCA Tejas Mark 1A aircraft set to be signed during upcoming Aero India. Indian Air Force is now looking to focus on the multirole fighter aircraft project under which it is planning to acquire 114 combat aircraft expected to cost over Rs 1.3 lakh crore.  The Air Force had been undertaking one fighter aircraft project at a time and now its 83 LCA Mark 1A fighters have been cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rs 50,000 crore deal is set to be signed in Bengaluru during Aero India.  "The 83 LCA Tejas would be replacing the four squadrons of the MiG-21 fighter jets which are set to be phased out in near future. The Chief of the Air Indian Air Force launches e-governance portal Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria PVSM AVSM VM ADC formally launched the IAF e-Governance (e-Office) portal at Air HQ, Vayu Bhavan on Thursday. The implementation undertaken as part of Digital India and e-governance initiative will transform the entire Indian Air Force to a paperless office workflow. The launch of e-Governance in IAF marks a paradigm shift from the current method of correspondence, filing and documentation to digital mode. Retirement Age of Troops in Army, Air Force & Navy Set to Increase, Says CDS General Rawat

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat has said that the retirement age of jawans in the Army, airmen in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and sailors in the Navy will be extended as it could benefit nearly 15 lakh men of all three armed forces.  “We are soon bringing a policy to extend the service profile of the men (forces nomenclature for troops) and have an increased minimum retirement age,” said General Rawat in an exclusive interaction with The Tribune yesterday. On being asked if he was looking to cut down the manpower costs as rising salaries and pensions were taking away a large portion of the budget, General Rawat said, “I am looking at manpower costs. Why should a jawan serve for just 15 or 17 years, why cannot he serve for 30 years? Induction of BVRAAM Astra into IAF fleet will turn the odds in India's favour against Pakistan

HIGHLIGHTS The IAF is in the process of inducting the DRDO's Astra missile into its fleet.  |  Photo : PTI Along with the Meteor missile, India's indigenously made Astra missile, will allow the IAF to regain the air strike superiority it surrendered to Pakistan post the Kargil War. Pakistan's AIM-120 C-5 AMRAAM missile, reportedly, has a maximum range of approximately 105 km. The MICA has a maximum range of just 50km, and the R-77, supposedly Russia's answer to the American missile, has a range of  80km. The Astra, with a reported range of 100km, will prove to be a fine addition to the spine of the IAF's fleet. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun the process to procure and induct the indigenously developed Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Astra missile into its fleet.
