Historic! Army begins process to grant Permanent Commission to women officers

 According to an official release by the Ministry of Defence on Saturday “in order to make the proceedings transparent, women officers have been permitted to witness the proceedings as observers.” The women officers cannot be totally ruled out from the command assignments, a bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud, had observed. (File photo: IE) The proceedings to screen women officers to grant them Permanent Commission (PC) has commenced at the Special No 5 Selection Board. The specially-constituted board that is headed by a Senior General Officer, and which includes a woman officer of the rank of Brigadier, started its screening process at the Army Headquarters on Sept 14. Centre grants permanent commission to women Army officers in eight more streams at defence forces

Representative Image The government on Thursday gave the final go-ahead to permanent induction of women Army officers in eight more streams. The Army said in a statement: “The government has issued the formal sanction letter for grant of Permanent Commission (PC) to women officers in the Indian Army, paving the way for empowering women officers to shoulder larger roles in the organisation.” The order specifies grant of PC to Short Service Commissioned (SSC) women officers in eight more streams of the Indian Army — Army Air Defence (AAD), Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (ASC), Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), and Intelligence Corps.
