INS KOLKATA is the lead ship of the Kolkata-class guided-missile destroyers constructed at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and is operated by Indian Navy. It was launched on 30 March 2006 handed over to the navy on 10 July 2014 after completing her sea trials. Last year on 16 August 2014 it was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
INS Kolkata have 7,500 tons displacement, 163 meters length and 17.4 meters beam with the speed of 30 knots in excess and 8000+ nautical miles range.
"INS Kolkata is going to the Indian Navy. This is also a testing time for Indian scientists and engineers. INS Kolkata proves India's indigenous capability," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at commissioning of the warship into Indian Navy in Mumbai.
"As we dedicate this ship to the nation, we display to the world, our 'buddhi bal' and our manufacturing capabilities. INS Kolkata is a symbol of self-reliance and will boost the confidence of armed forces and inspire the youth at the same time," he said.
