The Indian Army’s first major recruitment rally since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country will see nearly 14,000 candidates screened over the next eight days in Bengaluru.
Nearly 30% of these candidates are women who are aspiring to join the Corps of Military Police (CMP), which, earlier this year, became the first army branch to have women in its rank and file. Male candidates will be selected for various roles spread across the army.
Tuesday, the first day of the nine-day drive, saw more than 1,000 women being screened. An officer from the Karnataka and Kerala sub-area overseeing the rally, “Last week there was an open rally in Ludhiana, but the numbers were not as many. This is the first major rally the army is conducting after Covid and we have women candidates from all five southern states and men from Karnataka.”
Trials are being conducted to select jawans and the first three days have been dedicated to screening women candidates. Men will be screened between December 18 and 23.
“We’ve received applications from more than 4,000 women and 10,000 men,” the officer said.
Dr Shivanna, assistant commissioner, Bengaluru South, who said the district administration was roped in to provide accommodation and health facilities for all candidates, also confirmed the numbers.
